On Thursday, September 17, 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., The Stony Brook School will host a book signing in Gaebelein Library of Lost to the West: The Forgotten Byzantine Empire that Rescued Western Civilization. Authored by former SBS History Department Faculty Member Lars Brownworth '93, the book builds on Lars' popular and award-winning podcasts series, "12 Byzantine Rulers," which Lars created while teaching at Stony Brook. Lars' podcast sparked interest from national media including Wired magazine, NPR, USA Today, and The New York Times. |

Scheduled for a September 15 release, Lost to the West has received a "starred review" on the American Library Association's September Booklist. Reviewer Bryce Christensen writes, "In his compelling account of the Byzantine Empire, Brownworth unfolds the astonishing story of how the glory of Rome survived in Constantinople - New Rome for its proud residents - almost a millennium after the collapse of Rome itself. Readers learn how Diocletian and Constantine transferred much of the Empires power to the great new city on the Bosporus long before the old capital fell, and they see how the transplanted flame of Roman culture burned brightly under the protection of a long line of Byzantine emperors. . . . Even Byzantine rulers notable for their brutal treachery (such as John Tzimisces) provide riveting episodes in the survival of an empire that long shielded the vulnerable West against Islamic armies while also preserving the literary treasures of classical Rome and Greece." Published by Crown Publishing, a division of Random House, Lost to the West is also available as a downloadable audio book. In addition to the book signing at SBS, Lars will be speaking at the Smithsonian Institute's Resident Associates Program on December 2, 2009, in Washington DC.
